Saving bean seed

Long beans, picked young. A few stay on the vine for seed.

Every year I leave the three or four best bean plants unpicked. The pods turn yellow, then brown and papery, and when they rattle they are ready.

Shelled them on the porch, laid the beans on a tray for a week, then into a glass jar with a label. Paper envelopes got damp in the shed two years ago and I lost a whole batch, so jars only now.

About 300 g of seed this year, which is far more than I need. Some will go to the neighbours.
