Garlic in, and a lesson about spacing
Forty cloves went in along the east fence on Saturday. Last year I put them about 10 cm apart and most of the heads came out small, so this time it is 15 cm in the row and a bit more between rows.
I only used the big outer cloves from the heads I kept back in July. The small inner ones went to the kitchen. Someone told me years ago that a big clove makes a big bulb, and here it has been roughly true.
Pointy end up, about two knuckles deep, then a thin layer of straw. The hens will try to scratch the straw away, so an old fence panel is leaning over the row until the shoots are up.
For next year: mark the row ends with sticks. I forgot where the spring onions were and dug up half of them.
